Take a look at this, Kris Thorne Walks Away From This Spectacular Crash in Las Vegas!
In a heart-pounding turn of events at the NHRA Nevada Nationals held at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, reigning NHRA FuelTech Pro Mod Drag Racing Series champion Kris Thorne miraculously emerged unscathed from a harrowing accident on a Saturday evening.
Thorne, who had been leading in the points standings as the series’ championship season finale commenced, found himself in a fierce battle against Signei Frigo during the opening round of eliminations. In a split second, disaster struck as he lost control of his Bahrain 1 Racing, ProCharger-boosted Camaro. The vehicle collided with the retaining wall and subsequently flipped onto its roof.
Prior to the incident, Thorne had been well aware of the need to maintain his position and not allow rivals like Mike Castellana and Justin Bond to gain valuable points. The series had introduced a new points format for the Road to the Championship, with 30 points awarded per round at the Las Vegas event. This meant that the winner of the event could potentially gain a significant advantage, amassing up to 120 points over a driver eliminated in the first round. Justin Bond was trailing Thorne by a mere 31 points, and Castellana was 50 points behind.
Reflecting on the incident, Kris Thorne candidly admitted his mistake, saying, “I just got crossed up. I didn’t do a good job driving… I should have lifted. You get caught up in things, championship stuff on the line, and just over-drove it and didn’t do a good job.” He further acknowledged that even experienced drivers can falter under the pressure, adding, “I don’t care who you are, you get in predicaments like this, your mind’s not right, and you do stupid things.” Fortunately, Thorne walked away from the accident unscathed, a testament to the safety measures in place in NHRA racing.
